Great lakes theology conference

For undergraduates and those considering seminary who desire to engage deeply on the pressing theological issues of the day with their peers.  This conference is for you

2024 Call for Papers

The general theme for the conference is “Humanity.” Papers may choose to address the question: “How do human beings play a role in God’s purposes?” Other possible topics related to the theme include but are not limited to:

Humanity and other creatures
Humanity in the Bible
Humanity and technology
Humanity and trauma
Humanity and globalization
Humanity and AI
Human identity
The church as a human community
Eschatology and humanity

In addition to our theme, we will entertain proposals that touch upon any aspect of Christian theology, biblical studies, and ministry. Papers prepared for undergraduate courses are suitable, but independent work is also welcome.

Proposals should state a title, demonstrate a clear focus, outline the questions addressed in the presentation/paper, and preview the sources engaged. Proposals should be between 200 and 350 words and should be submitted via the linked form by October 11th, 2024.

Each paper presentation will be given a 20-minute slot. Students should deliver a 10-minute paper with the rest of their time dedicated to discussion.

All who present are encouraged to submit their paper for further consideration for our Great Lakes Theology Paper Prize (see below), which has an accompanying award of $500. For consideration, the full paper is due one week in advance of the conference on October 31 at 11:59 pm.

Those proposing papers must be registered by October 11 for consideration.

Great Lakes Theology Paper PRize

The Great Lakes Theology Conference paper prize seeks to inspire and support the next generation of theological thinkers. This prize is awarded to an individual beginning theological study—someone without graduate-level training—who exhibits promise in the form of creativity and thoughtfulness.

Guidelines and Guidance for Submissions

For consideration, final papers must be submitted to gltc@westernsem.edu by October 31st.

Submitted papers must be delivered at the Great Lakes Theology Conference for consideration; however, while the paper should be written in a formal (i.e., academic tone) with appropriate references to secondary literature as well as Scripture, adaptations for oral delivery are certainly appropriate.

Papers should be no longer than 2,000 words (including footnotes but excluding bibliography). Any style guide and referencing system will be accepted, though the Chicago Manual of Style is recommended.

Winners will be determined by a panel of professors across disciplines at Western Theological Seminary and presented on the final day of the conference.

Those proposing papers must be registered by October 11 for consideration.
